The Slow Scroll, No. 03
Decoding socks, decluttering my brain, recent outfits and more from the last week.
Morning friend, I hope you’ve had a great weekend so far! I’m due to pick my parents up from the airport, so I’ll have to save all my thoughts on my (somewhat) unintentional low buy January for another post!
This post is too long for email, so I recommend reading it in Substack for the best experience! I’m hopeful to grow this community in 2025 — if you enjoy this post, please leave a heart or share with friends who might also enjoy following along :)

In my DMs:
I swear, socks have never been a hotter topic! I get it though. Between figuring out hemlines, pant styles, and shoes, it’s a bit of a science to find a sock that works with all three.
For socks to pair with loafers, keep in mind fabric weight and shaft height — you want a fabric that is thin enough to comfortably slip into a loafer and a sock shaft that is tall enough so there aren’t any gaps between the sock and pant hemline.
For pairing with loafers, I suggest the Bombas lightweight calf socks. They’re more pricey, but I’m always happy with the quality and how comfortable they are. I haven’t tried these socks from Comme Si, but there are so many colors to choose from and claim to stay up all day. I need to try!
Looking for a lower price option? Consider Calzdeonia — I bought a few sock sets to wear with loafers last year and I love them. I don’t think the exact styles are still available, but these cashmere blend socks look like a great alternative. The ribbed knit adds a subtle, but interesting, detail.

What I listened to:
If you’re someone, like me, who is easily overwhelmed by clutter or frequently starts projects only to get overwhelmed and spiral — this episode 5 Easy Steps to Make Your Home and Your Mind Clutter-Free may change your mindset completely!
Last year, between my full time job, this Substack, Instagram, and trying to have a personal life, I often felt overwhelmed with lots of ideas but no way to sort through them. I’m really striving to find a better way of organizing my life — this episode gave me a lot of food for thought and I’m excited to put it into practice!

Recent outfits:
Outfit 1: A grey tonal outfit for the office — these wool blend trousers from Sezane are one of my favorite styles for work. The check cardigan (jacket?) is more casual than a blazer, but still feels polished for work, plus it adds a subdued pop of print. If you’re looking for a classic black ankle boot, consider these low heeled, sleek ankle boots. They are great for work or the weekend!
Outfit 2: It warmed up a bit this week in DC, so I took the opportunity to wear a dress to the office. I love wearing the knit vest and dress together during the winter. I especially like that the vest has a more relaxed fit and that the sleeves have a cap style cut. If the vest was too fitted, I think it would have felt too preppy or dated for me.
Outfit 3: One of my favorite color combinations is chocolate brown and red. I haven’t worn it much recently, so I decided to style my Saturday brunch outfit with that color combo in mind. I opted for the trend forward retro sunglasses to contrast against the classic cardigan, denim, and boots. If you’re looking for a wide leg denim that has a little elastic stretch, this style from AYR is a favorite.
Out and about in DC:
I don’t typically think of the Georgetown Waterfront as a restaurant destination (except for Fiola Mare) but I was excited to try River Club after learning it was from the same owners as Residents in Dupont.
We went for Saturday brunch with friends, and while the interiors were beautiful and vibes lively, the food was more of a miss for me. I don’t typically think of restaurant week as the time to visit new places, so maybe that was the issue? My salad was really tasty, but my main entree wasn’t anything special and the churros were over fried.
I would go back for drinks at the bar, but I don’t think I would go back for food.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on River Club! If you haven't been yet, and want to venture to Georgetown for a different meal, Chez Billy Sud is definitely worth the fuss.
